What is Keyboard Stands
The primary purpose of a keyboard stand is to provide a stable and ergonomic platform for your instrument. It also allows you to customize the playing height, which can reduce strain and fatigue during long practice sessions or performances. Advantages of Keyboard Stands
Stability and Support
A keyboard stand forms the foundational support for digital pianos and keyboards, offering stability crucial for a musician's performance. It acts as a reliable base, ensuring that the instrument remains steadfast during intense playing sessions or live gigs. The robust structure of these stands prevents any unnecessary movement, allowing musicians to concentrate solely on their music without concerns about the instrument's stability.
Ergonomic Customization
One of its key benefits lies in its adjustable features. Keyboard stands can be tailored to fit a musician's preferred playing height and angle. This customization plays a vital role in optimizing the ergonomics of the setup, minimizing strain or discomfort during extended practice or performance sessions. This adaptability fosters a conducive environment for musicians to explore their creativity comfortably.
Instrument Protection
Beyond its supportive role, the stand acts as a guardian for musical instruments. By providing a secure platform, it helps prevent potential damage that might arise from improper placement or accidental knocks. Whether in a studio, on stage, or at home, the keyboard stand serves as a protective barrier, ensuring the safety and longevity of the instrument.
Versatility and Accessibility
Keyboard stands often come with various configurations and functionalities. Some feature additional tiers or attachment options, accommodating multiple keyboards or peripheral devices like MIDI controllers. Moreover, these stands allow for easy accessibility to pedals, cables, and other equipment, contributing to a well-organized and streamlined setup for musicians.
Performance Enhancement
A well-chosen keyboard stand enhances a musician's overall performance. It enables better posture, which translates to improved playing technique and less strain on muscles and joints. This conducive setup, coupled with the stand's stability, allows musicians to focus on their craft, elevating the quality of their performances.
Types of Keyboard Stands
"X" Style Keyboard Stand
This simple X-Style stand gets its name from its design. There are two sets of 2 steel pipes each connected with a steel strut. There is a scissor-type folding action with a basic axel that connects the two sections; this design allows for height adjustments and for the stand to be collapsed completely flat, making it the lightest, easiest, lowest cost stand on the market meaning you can find these for sale in most musical instrument stores.
It also has the lowest weight capacity, is prone to some wobble, and isn't known for its durability. Some digital piano manufacturers, such as Yamaha and Casio, offer a low-cost X stand option as well.
"Double X" Style Stand
The Double X-Style stand is an improvement on the first design, where the horizontal pipes that act as the feet and platform are braced with two sets of scissoring struts, instead of one set as with the first design. These also offer adjustable height via locking straps or some other type of locking mechanism.
Z Stand
The Z-stand is one of the best blends of portability and stability on the market. Several companies make the type with a few differences in how they collapse. But once fully deployed, they're all virtually the same and are ideal for heavier keyboards.
There are two steel 'Z's which sit parallel to each other, connected by two telescoping shafts, and the vertical part of the 'Z' also telescopes, giving the stand both adjustable width and height, with lots of leg room. These are generally speaking high-quality options.
There are also certain heavy-duty Second Tier Keyboard Stand versions that allow you to place two keyboards on them at once, allowing keyboardists to rapidly switch between two keyboards or even play both at once. The single-tier stand is of course more popular, but these exist for those who need them.
Folding Table Style Keyboard Stand
We don't actually know if the industry has a 'name' for this, but these types of stands look like those ubiquitous folding tables that you see at every wedding or event hall. The top of the table is rectangular, and two sets of legs swing down from hinges along the two short sides of the table. This tabletop option is also a sturdy stand.
"T" Stand
The final stand type is referred to as a T stand since that's precisely what it looks like when folded up. There are four articulating arms, all with a 90-degree elbow, which form the legs of the stand. They're attached at either end of a central spine and are highly flexible.
When to Use Them: Like the Table Style Stand, the T stand is another alternative to the Z stand that will come down to personal preference.
Stability
A stable and sturdy stand is essential to ensure that your keyboard remains secure while you use. Look for stands made from durable materials such as metal or high-quality wood. Avoid flimsy or wobbly stands that may compromise the safety of your instrument.
Height Adjustment
Keyboard players come in different shapes and sizes, so it's important to find a stand that offers height adjustability. This feature allows you to customize the height of the keyboard to suit your individual playing style and posture. Look for stands that offer multiple height settings or those with adjustable legs.
The height of the piano bench is essential for maintaining proper posture while playing. Ideally, your arms should be at a level parallel to the floor, forming a right angle at the elbow. A bench with adjustable height options is a good choice, because it allows you to find the most comfortable position for your body. This is particularly important if you share the bench with a child or others who may have different height requirements.
Portability
If you often need to transport your keyboard for gigs or rehearsals, portability becomes a crucial factor. Consider stands and benches that are lightweight and easy to fold or disassemble. Look for features such as foldable legs, quick-release mechanisms, or carrying cases that make transportation hassle-free.

Compatibility
Ensure that the piano stand you choose is compatible with your specific keyboard model. Check the measurements and weight capacity to ensure a proper fit. Some manufacturers offer stands and benches specifically designed for their keyboards, which can provide an ideal match.
Comfort and Padding
Since you may spend hours practicing on your keyboard, comfort is paramount. A padded bench can help to reduce fatigue and make your practice sessions more enjoyable and productive. Look for a bench with ample padding to provide support and cushioning for long playing sessions.
Stability and Durability
A stable bench is important for maintaining balance and stability while playing. Go for a bench with a sturdy frame and legs that can support your weight without wobbling. Additionally, consider the construction materials and make sure they are of high quality for durability. A durable bench will last longer, saving you the hassle of frequent replacements.
Style and Aesthetics
While not directly related to your playing experience, the style and aesthetics of the bench can greatly enhance the overall ambiance of your practice space. Consider the design and color of the bench, ensuring it complements your keyboard and the overall decor of the room.
Adjust a Keyboard Stand Height
Using an X-Style Stand
Hold the stand upright so the longer beams are flat on the ground. The shorter beams on the stand are designed to hold your keyboard so you can jam out without them getting in your way. The longer beams are designed to keep the stand stable while you play, so rest them flat on the ground.
Pull out the clutch in the center of the stand. The clutch is the locking mechanism in the center of your stand. It looks like a knob, handle, or lever, depending on the design of your stand. Take hold of the clutch and pull or rotate it to disengage it from the locking mechanism.
Stretch the stand open until the top beams are the height you want them. If you're playing your keyboard seated, open the stand until the top beams are just above your knees so you can comfortably sit behind it. If you're playing your keyboard while standing, then open up the stand so the upper beams are in line with your hips so you can easily reach the keys with your hands.
Slide the clutch into one of the slots to lock the stand in the open position. Hold the stand open and insert the clutch into the slot on the locking mechanism to hold the stand open at your setting. Make sure the clutch is fully inserted into the slot so it won't fall open when you put your keyboard on the stand.
Wiggle the stand to identify which foot needs to be adjusted. The feet of your keyboard stand are the round grips on the ends of the lower beams that help stabilize the stand. If your keyboard stand is shaky or unstable, place your hands on it and give it a good wobble. Look for which foot is uneven with the rest to identify which needs to be adjusted.
Lift the stand and rotate the foot on the beam to make adjustments. Once you've identified which foot needs to be adjusted, lean the stand to raise the foot off of the ground. Then, rotate the foot clockwise to raise it or counterclockwise to lower it.
Place the stand upright and shake it to see if it's stable. Rest the lower beams on the ground so they're flat and give the stand a good wobble. If it's stable, you can place your keyboard back on it and play it without any shakiness. If the stand is still unstable, make additional adjustments by rotating the feet as needed until it is stable.
Using a Table-Style Stand
Open the legs of the stand and lock them so they stay open. Push the support bars connected to each leg until they're completely straight to lock the legs open.
Loosen the knobs on the underside of the stand. Use your hands to rotate the knobs counterclockwise to loosen them up so the stand can be extended.
Pull the stand open to the width of your keyboard and tighten the knobs. Use your hands to pull and stretch out the width of the stand. Continue widening it until it's wide enough to fit your keyboard. Then, turn the knobs clockwise, or to the right, until they're tight so the stand is secure and stable.
Turn the knobs at the feet of the stand to extend the legs. Find the knob that locks the legs in place just above the feet and loosen them by turning them counterclockwise. Then, pull the legs out to extend them so each leg is even. extended.
Tighten the knobs and stand the stand up to check its stability. Once you've extended all of the legs, stand up the stand on its feet to see if it's even. Give the stand a good shake to see how stable it is. If there's any wobbliness, adjust the legs until the stand is sturdy before placing your keyboard on it and jamming.
